Evaluating my training

For those of you reading this that know me, you'll know that I like numbers. I really like them. I have all sorts of stats about my training: paces, distances, times, heart rates, ratio of pace to heart rate, comparing that ratio to distances... it's almost obsessive, or maybe it is. In the past I've used this numerical data to help me plan my training. I really like to see the empirical connection between the training effort and the race results.

Now that I've handed over the development of my training to a coach, I find myself in dire need to look back at what I was doing a year ago to what I'm doing now. For some reason, I had it in my head that I was slacking off compared to this time last year. So last night, I pulled out the logs from last year. It took about 3 minutes to see that I'm WAY ahead of where I was last year in both intensity and volume.

With 130 days to go until the Blackfoot again, my confidence just got a big boost with that revelation!

I'm also planning to be more careful with my diet this year. Not that I tend to eat junk, but I'm going to really try to eat more in keeping with the periodization principles discussed in Carmichael's book "Food for Fitness: Eat Right to Train Right".

This week will have 5 days of running, plus a couple weight training sessions and hopefully a hot yoga class. I just hope it's not -30 again for my 3 hour run on Saturday.

D.
