The New Workouts

This past week was the start of my new training regime. I'm now working with a coach, the first time since high school. Mike Booth of Endurance Matters is the guy putting together the killer workouts and it really started with a bang this week.

My first workout looked pretty basic when looking at it as words on paper - 60 minutes at easy pace with 200 metre sprints every 5 minutes. The kicker here was the pace for the sprints - roughly 39 seconds for each 200m sprint - that's 5:15 min/mile or 3:15 min/km - pretty darn fast for a guy like me. It was a tough workout, but even though the 9th sprint felt like sheer agony, surprisingly the 10th wasn't as bad - which leaves me thinking most of the workout was a mental one as much as a physical one.

The rest of the week was pretty relaxed with two other 60 minute runs at a more relaxed pace. The weekend will be interesting, 150 minutes at my easy run pace, but being the sucker for punishment I am, I'll probably do as much of it on the hill as possible. I should end up with a 40 mile week when all is done, so pretty moderate compared to my peak times and consistent with my base building from last year.

Now if the online registration for the Blackfoot would open up all would be better!
